WildNet Africa No. WNET0034

Ostrich

A fully selfcontained ostrich production unit yielding products of export quality is available in the Eastern Cape.

LOCATION:

The farm is situated 5 km from the Johannesburg/Port Elizabeth highway, approximately 140 km north of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The Fish River forms part of the farm's boundary for about 10 km.

SIZE:
1 520 hectares

WATER:
Water is supplied by the Fish River which constitutes 10 km of the farm's border.

THE FARMING SETUP:

Feeding
The property consists of 1 400 ha of veld and 120 ha under irrigation. The veld is subdivided into 4 camps which are utilised for egg production by 650 adult breeding birds. The area under irrigation consists of 100 ha planted with lucern and 20 ha of mealies. This land produces sufficient feed for 2 500 adult ostriches. Selfsufficiency as far as food is concerned, ensures that costs are kept low and profits high.

Breeding capacity
The abovementioned breeding flock produces approximately 20 000 eggs per breeding season (8 months). The eggs are collected in the veld and placed in stateoftheart Buckeye incubators. These incubators have a capacity of 6 000 eggs per sixweek period.

About 15 000 chicks are hatched each season. Some of the chicks are sold at the dayold stage while the rest is raised in chickrearing facilities on the farm. These rearing facilities are sufficient for rearing 2 500 chicks to an adult slaughtering age of about 14 months.

Slaughtering facilities
The farm has a slaughtering quota of 1 200 birds per annum in a EUcertified export abattoir. Most of the meat is exported to Europe while the rest goes to the East.

Byproducts
The farm owns a share in Grahamstown Tanning Co which allows it to tan and colour 1 200 skins per annum.

SALE PRICE:
R6,400,000 Currency table. As the farm will be sold as a going concern, all the necessary agricultural equipment used for planting and harvesting crops will be included in the sale price.
